Cannon Family post 6/1/10

Sad to say, this is the last blog for the competition, but I will let you know how my family is doing even after the competition.

So, we are down to the last week.  I asked my oldest daughter the other day, “did you think I would hang in there?” She replied “yes, but I thought you would struggle more than you did.”  Truth be told, I thought I would try to hang in there.  I did not think I had the endurance, determination, discipline and dedication.  I SURPRISED MYSELF!  I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF!!!

Although I am saddened this competition is coming to an end, I am so grateful and appreciative of the opportunity.  I have learned to be a better me.  I learned to eat properly and I learned to exercise properly.

Because of this opportunity I take better care of myself and I no longer live through my family.  I move more (and better); I eat less a (and better); I’m more discipline and I like how I’m looking.  No, I didn’t lose a lot of pounds, but I’m more toned and I lost inches.

I’m going to miss the three day a week fellowships, but I’m looking forward to my new beginning, my new lifestyle!

Because of The Arena Club and the dedicated trainers, I am on my way to a great start.

So, what’s new? Last Tuesday was fun. We learned how to strength train every major muscle of our body. Husbands and wives were separated and we did different routines; therefore we can teach each other what we learned. Kathy emphasized “women can do anything men can do, we just might have to adjust our weights”. Also, on Tuesday, the kids had their challenge. Our Courtney came in second followed closely by Brad. As we continue on our journey, time is ticking down! All of us are getting anxious. Anybody could be the winning family! What makes us most anxious (I think) is the fact that we don’t know how the team is calculating our points. At any rate we are all winners. We have accomplished so much. But I must admit, I would LOVE that free membership for my family and me.

Just wanted to drop a note from the Holthaus Family. Theron and Kathy have been fantastic Tues. Night they gave us a complete body workout that we can use on our own time. Rebecca seemed to have fun with the children’s challenge even though she got the lowest points. This has been good for her also. Charles and I are doing well. We are really enjoying running on the treadmills and have been able to cut some time off our 1st 5K. (Little steps do add up.) Most of all we are feeling better about ourselves and noticing changes in our appearance. (Yeah!!!!!!) Have a good day! Alicia

So, I won the Nutrition challenge!  Very awesome!!  Seems like I really do know what to eat, I just have a really hard time actually eating it!  Why is it so much easier to cook some burgers and fries for dinner?  I would be perfectly fine with some grilled chicken and steamed broccoli but the rest of the family hates both of those!  Why must it be so tough???

This weekend we had a really good (and hard!) Pilates/Core workout with Alicia.  That was very cool and I would enjoy doing more exercises like these.  I have a stability ball at home but never really knew what to do with it besides crunches.  I am amazed at the workout you can get without even using any machines!

We are really coming down to the wire with the program and part of me is really excited and another part is kind of sad too.  I really, really want to win (of course) and I know the Health Fair where the winner is announced is going to be a lot of fun, but I am really going to hate not hanging out with the awesome families and trainers we have met along the way.

Hopefully we can all remain friends!

So we are coming down to the end of the competition and > things are getting so exciting!  We have had several challenges in the last few weeks including a written nutrition quiz and a spinning and strength challenge.  We also had a video taping and interview recently with our children which was really fun.  I am loving this challenge so far, and am saddened that it will soon come to an end.  I think that the staff members at the Arena Club are truly wonderful people who are very dedicated to helping us improve our health.  I have made some wonderful friendships with the families involved in the challenge and wish that we could all win.  I’m looking forward to working hard in the next few weeks to try and win the competition!

This has been a heck of a week!!!  3 days at the Arena Club with the group and challenges on all 3 of them!

Last Friday we had a nutrition challenge.  I am confident that I did pretty good on that one :)   Hopefully the rest of our family did too!  Then Saturday, we had the spinning challenge.  For anyone that has never done spinning, I guarantee you it is TOUGH!!!  I always ride the stationary bikes but the spinning bikes are a whole new world! For this challenge we had 20 minutes to ride as far as we could.  Gene won this one with an amazing 12.1 miles!!!  Wow!  I didn’t do half bad with 10.6 miles, which I can’t even imagine doing before coming to the Arena Club!

Then on Tuesday we had a strength challenge.  Another tough one…  I really did think I was stronger than I proved to be during this challenge!  But, after expressing my disappointment, the trainers reassured me again that before the program I couldn’t even do half of the things we did during the challenge.  Wall sits are incredibly hard and so are planks!  Will kicked some major butt on those though!  In fact everyone did really well and I could tell they were all very proud of how far they have come in the last 9 weeks!

We had a pretty busy week so we didn’t make it to the club on Wednesday, Brad had a band concert at school.  Honestly, we didn’t even have time to exercise at home that day :(   It’s ok though, we were still recovering from the strength challenge on Tuesday!

Making healthy choices is still pretty hard but I am noticing that it is getting easier every day.  When I eat something bad, my body tells me!  I do know one thing, I am so ready for some red, ripe tomatoes from the garden! I could live off those things in the summer!  There is nothing like fresh veggies from the produce stand!

Anyway, with the contest almost over, we are continuing to put all out effort into making our family as healthy as it can be.  We really hope to win but even if we don’t, everything we have learned during the Fit4Life program had made all of us winners!!!

Since our last blog we have taken a pool challenge, a nutrition challenge, a spin (cycle) challenge and a strength challenge.

So how did our family do?

Pool challenge – my family can’t swim so we did okay.  Actually no one swam, we all walked.  Will did not do too bad he came in 3rd (I think) and Chris came in 5th (I think)!  I have a HUGE fear of water so I accomplished a goal of over coming my fear even though I came is last.  I only had 31 laps in 30 minutes.

Nutrition challenge – we did not get the results back yet, but I feel pretty confident about this one.  Hopefully I can say I finally won a challenge (without the help of my family)!

Spin challenge – we did not do too bad.  We did not place in 1st, 2nd or 3rd this time.  I was a little disappointed in myself because I ride the stationary bikes all the time so I thought I was pretty prepare.  Oh well! I rode 10.5 miles in 20 minutes.  Will rode 9 miles – he always said that was not his strong suit.  His goal was to be steady and persistent.  Chris did a little better than me.  She had 10.9 miles with a bum knee that day!

Strength challenge – we had to do 4 things: dips, planks, wall sits and push-ups.  Chris won two and Will won two.  I place in 3rd on the dips, right behind Chris (1st) and Will (2nd).  I’m not sure how I placed on the others. I know I did not come in last in anything!  I thought when I heard strength challenge it would consist of weight lifting so that’s how I prepared. Maybe the weight lifting helped, it certainly did not hurt.

I’m not losing pounds that much but I am losing inches and eating correctly, that’s the important point.  I lost about 15 inches.  Will’s goal was to bulk up and he is.  Christian’s goal is to have better endurance and she does.

I am not as competitive or athletic as Will and Christian (his junior!). But I am enjoying myself and I’m enjoying the fellowships.

As far as the progress of things everything is going extremely well.  Colin and I absolutely love coming to the gym and working out and we love being a part of this competition.  We have met some great new friends, and just absolutely love the staff members that are helping us on our journey.  We have both gained a lot of knowledge and strength about fitness and nutrition and the proper ways to live a more healthy lifestyle.  I feel sad that this journey is almost at an end.  I wish we could all be winners!  I will see you tomorrow.  Also, can you please leave me your phone number?  I don’t check my email nearly often enough.  Thanks.

As far as everything else we are doing good loosing inches and pounds. Most of all making a change. Our goal is to live a healthier life so we can see our children grow. We were married 19 years before we adopted Rebecca. We were both forty. Since we adopted our Son Ryan, so you can see why it’s important for us to make a change. We are really enjoying the program and the staff and trainers have been awesome. I’ll keep you updated.

Meet the Families

June 7, 2010

The Holthaus Family – Charles Holthaus wrote in their application essay, that in the 25 years he and his wife Alicia have been married, they have “managed to gain another person between them” referring to the 140 pounds they have put on collectively over the years. Starting their family in their 40’s through the adoption of their daughter Rebecca and son Ryan, “put us at a disadvantage to begin with (age wise), let alone being overweight and out of shape”. In addition, as a 30 year veteran of the Harford County police force, Charles felt his strength and endurance had diminished over the years due to lack of exercise and a poor diet. His family, he said, was ready for not just another diet, but a lifestyle change. The Family Fit 4 Life initial screening of blood pressure, body fat, and cholesterol was a sobering reality check for the couple, but they were up for the challenge.

The McDermott Family – Karrie McDermott is a busy woman. Raising her 9 year old son Colin on her own, working full time at Upper Chesapeake Health, and pursuing a nursing degree, Karrie writes, “As I’m sure you can imagine the stress of a busy lifestyle and such heavy responsibilities has unfortunately led my son and me down the path to poor eating and an unhealthy lifestyle”. Having struggled with her own weight all her life, Karrie was concerned that her own child was overweight and not very physically active. “I so desperately want my child to be in good health, and I don’t want him to suffer the ridicule of other children like I did as a child”. The McDermott clan made a great team and lived up to their commitment to work hard and make positive changes.

The Gibson Family – “We are a family of overweight people who have struggled with our weight our whole lives”, writes Gene Gibson. “I’ve always wanted to get into better shape, but even the Navy couldn’t get the weight off of me.”  Son Bradlee at 13 is already 6 feet tall and over 200 lbs, and “that hurts me because I don’t know what to do to help him. I’ve tried to get him involved in sports, however, being out of shape he gets frustrated very fast.” Wife Melissa is committed to exercise, but becomes frustrated because she doesn’t lose weight. She’s had success in the past, but it just doesn’t seem to last. His plea of “Please help us with this issue, it would mean a lot to me as a dad and a husband.” as well as their commitment to give this their all made them perfect candidates for Family Fit 4 Life.

The Wehrman Family – Emma Wehrman is a girl with goals. At 13 years old she saw the ad for the Family Fit 4 Life contest, decided it was perfect for family, and submitted an application. “I believe my family really needs this. I am 13 years old and overweight. Being “bigger” and a teenager is not very easy. I’ve gotten some pretty nasty comments. I just want to feel comfortable in my own skin and be healthy. I really want to prove you can change your health.” She is also concerned about her sisters Sarah and Katie, as well as mom Jen, wanting them to get fit and feel good. Her real concern is held for her dad Mel though as she laments that without a positive lifestyle change, that he might possibly not make it to her wedding. “We all just sit around the computer or TV and we always, always, always eat on the run. Also, there has been a lot of stress in the family and we need to spend much more time together.” Emma’s letter rang familiar with many of our Harford families and the frantic demands of modern family life so many of us experience.

The Cannon Family – Mom Toni Cannon wrote,”The mom of the family is always taking care of the needs of others: work, the family, church needs and community service. She forgot to take care of herself and got lost”. The family, although relatively active, was in need of learning a healthier lifestyle. The girls Christian and Courtney enjoy running and dad Will loves to shoot hoops, but everyone was always “on the go in different directions”. A primary problem was eating on the run. They wanted to learn how to eat healthier and either learn how to prepare quick healthy meals or how to prepare healthy meals in advance. “We would like to become a healthier family, learn to eat better, get better fit, and DO IT TOGETHER.”
